From the Editor's Desk - Issue # 13 - January - I
The Gujjar agitation over caste reservations is finally over.
The 17-days siege of the railway tracks, roads, milk supply channels & other civic facilities within the regions predominantly inhabited by the Gujjar community has been lifted & life slowly limps back to normal. The State government & the Gujjar leadership, both have claimed victory & are happy with the outcome of the talks though analysts say nothing has been gained or conceded beyond what existed originally.
Another agitation in another region is heating up. The Telengana demand is now on the Center’s platter & various options are being put forth & agitated about.
I guess, all these are unavoidable & inevitable evils – some would even call them necessary & signs of a thriving democracy where people get to express their demands & dissatisfaction with the existing regime.
However, one would wish that there are mechanisms within the system that are alert & vigilant to address & redress these demands before they balloon into an agitation that takes heavy toll of civic life, property & development. Frivolous agitations with an eye on only political gains should be dealt with sternly as per the law of the land.
On Jan 30, a March Against Corruption is now planned by a group of concerned, eminent citizens of the country to demand enactment of effective laws against corruption. As enlightened citizens, let us join the crusade against this cancer that is eating into the vitals of the country’s development. For details, please click here.
